New Shoes for the Cupid Shuffle
At 8:15 Saturday morning, the air-conditioned gym of Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School was flooded with nearly fifty eager StoneBridge volunteers and Samaritan’s Feet workers, anticipating the experience of washing the feet of many local children.
What a joy to know that these students will walk into their new school year with shoes that fit, as well as the blessing of being prayed over and encouraged by servants of God.
Tables were neatly organized with sneakers in rows of gender and size, ranging from toddlers up to mens thirteen. Water and sanitizing supplies were explained to volunteers, ensuring germ containment between children and pristine cleanliness. The detailed organization the Samaritan’s Feet volunteers displayed and attention to every step was astounding, proving that through much experience, they know exactly what to expect! Roles were assigned, gloves were donned, and the doors opened to a long line of hopeful students.
As they entered, they got a “swag bag” of either a backpack or a large bag of art supplies. The DJ kept the atmosphere lively with dance music, to which moms and kids enjoyed grooving to the Electric Slide, Cupid Shuffle, and more! As the kids were ushered to a station, their reactions to sitting with a stranger and having their feet washed varied. For the shy ones, the volunteers made light conversation and gave them the option of foot washing. Some were very chatty, enjoying the process and giving opinions on what kind of shoes they liked.
Most children were quite open to being prayed for and receptive to the reasons we did wash feet, as we explained that Jesus served his disciples by washing their feet. They were thankful, precious, and delighted with their shoes.
Samaritan’s Feet will reach their astounding number of ten million donated shoes this year. Ponder that for a minute. Ten million children and adults have been touched by the tender washing of their feet by the compassionate hands of volunteers all over the world, all in service to our Lord.
We serve a mighty God who can raise up a small army of volunteers early on a Saturday morning to serve his children. Let’s thank him for placing us for a purpose in our Charlotte communities.
