Long Story Short

The Bible, for all of its varied stories, is actually telling one story, with one common theme that runs all the way from Genesis to Revelation—a thread that holds the whole book together.
Long Story Short will help to understand the big-picture story of the Bible in just eleven phrases. Better than that, get to know the unique historical figure in the center of it all.
History is his-story.

  • God Made

    1. God Made

    Key Verse:
“So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” (Genesis 1:27)

    Key Idea:
God perfectly made all there is, out of nothing, and set us in his creation to bear his image in it.

  • We Broke

    2. We Broke

    Key Verse:
“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23)

    Key Idea:
Humanity rebelled against God and broke their relationship with him.

  • God Chose

    3. God Chose

    Key Verse:
“I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.” (Genesis 12:2)

    Key Idea:
God continues to pursue mankind by making a promise to bless the nations through his chosen people.

  • God Freed

    4. God Freed

    Key Verse:
“The Lord said, ‘I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned about their suffering. So I have come down to rescue them…’” (Exodus 3:7-8)

    Key Idea:
God rescues his people from death and enslavement, as a picture of an even greater rescue to come.

  • God Shepherded

    5. God Shepherded

    Key Verse:
“Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be established forever.” (2 Samuel 7:16)

    Key Idea:
God establishes Israel as a kingdom with a king, and makes a promise to sustain David’s throne.

  • We Strayed

    6. We Strayed

    Key Verse:
“What fault did your ancestors find in me, that they strayed so far from me?” (Jeremiah 2:5)

    Key Idea:
In spite of everything God has done for humanity, we continue, like sheep, to stray from him.

  • 7. Jesus Came

    Key Verse:
“You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.” (Luke 1:31-33)

    Key Idea:
Jesus comes into the world to restore our broken relationship with God.

  • Jesus Died

    8. Jesus Died

    Key Verse:
“God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” (2 Corinthians 5:21)

    Key Idea:
Jesus took the punishment that our rebellion deserved and became the perfect sacrifice for our sin.

  • Jesus Rose

    9. Jesus Rose

    Key Verse:
“Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: ‘The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.’” (Luke 24:5-7)

    Key Idea:
The Resurrection of Jesus is the central event of the whole Bible; it is the culmination of the Story thus far, and the down payment of the Story yet to come.

  • We Follow

    10. We Follow

    Key Verse:
“If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” (Romans 10:9)

    Key Idea:
We follow Christ because he came, died, and rose. And we follow patiently, expectantly, and joyfully.

  • We're Home

    11. We're Home

    Key Verse:
“We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord. So we make it our goal to please him, whether we are at home in the body or away from it.”  (2 Corinthians 5:8-9)

    Key Idea:
Our faith is lived out with an eye towards our heavenly home. In the meantime, we strive to bring as much of heaven to earth as possible.
