Chalk & the Gospel

You have taught children and infants to tell of your strength, silencing your enemies and all who oppose you. Psalm 8:2 NLT

Last year, before moving out of her apartment complex, then fifteen-year-old Mary Andreola had an opportunity to share Jesus in a beautiful way with some Indian children who played in the common area.

Kids from age three to eleven filled the play areas with joy and energy, and Mary wanted to be a part of this. She began playing soccer with them, then brought out the sidewalk chalk. She loved drawing and hanging out with them, listening to them speak their native language.

One day, Mary told them she needed to go because her mom was going to Bible study to learn about God and Jesus. One child exclaimed, “I love the Bible”, and another squealed, “I love God!”, even though they had little understanding of either from their Hindu faith. Being curious, they asked her to tell them stories about Jesus. Aware of their faith differences and undeterred, Mary boldly shared about Jesus and his earthly ministry. They couldn’t get enough, always surrounding her and asking for more. Mary had no doubt that they trusted her and believed every word she said.

The children also shared what their own religious practices were, such as having ceremonies to ward off evil spirits and participating in festivals and parties. Despite the mom’s awareness of what Mary was sharing with their children, they always thanked her for spending time with them, expressing their trust in her and gratitude.

These interactions went on for a few weeks before Mary and her family moved closer to StoneBridge. Before their relocation, Mary was able to give copies of The Jesus Storybook Bible to two children. She was also moved to share the parable of the mustard seed with an older Indian girl, explaining to her that even a tiny bit of faith in God could move a mountain.

The beautiful part of Mary’s story is its simplicity. Playing with the kids in her neighborhood, meeting them on their level, and building their trust, led to an uncomplicated explanation of who Jesus is and what he did for them. Not only did God stir Mary’s heart to reach out to these kids, but has also called her to go to India this summer. He had far reaching plans for her, even in the everyday play time.

God has taught children and infants to praise him (Psalm 8:2) and you and your children may be his instruments in your neighborhood. When you see kids at play on your street, join in the fun and maybe pick up some sidewalk chalk next time you are at the store!
