Cultivating Communion

Committing to the Word

Tim Keller said, ““In the word of the Lord, find the Lord of the word.”

You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life. John 5:39-40

A study from the The Center for Biblical Engagement revealed that spending four or more times a week in his word can have these benefits:

  1. Feeling lonely drops 30%

  2. Anger issues drop 32%

  3. Alcoholism drops 57%

  4. Marital infidelity drops 68%

  5. Feeling spiritually stagnant drops 60%

  6. Sharing your faith jumps 200%

Are you struggling to connect with the Bible and find meaningful ways to engage with its teachings? These steps are simple and can help you better understand the Bible’s wisdom while strengthening your faith.

1. Read

Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path. Psalm 119:105

2. Meditate

Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. Joshua 1:8

3. Pray

Ask God to assist you in understanding what you are reading and to help you apply it to your life. Thank God for what you are learning from his Word.

4. Listen

Listen to a Bible app while you take a walk, or drive to work.

Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.  Romans 10:17

5. Study

Go deeper to understand it better. Use a study Bible or try different translations.  Ask questions if you don’t understand something.

Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15

6. Share

Talk about your reading with friends or in a group, and ask questions to learn more.

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:19-20

7. Hand copy

Handwrite verses that are meaningful to you. This can be a slow and meditative process that helps you focus on the words and their meaning.

When he takes the throne of his kingdom, he is to write for himself on a scroll a copy of this law, taken from that of the Levitical priests. It is to be with him, and he is to read it all the days of his life so that he may learn to revere the Lord his God and follow carefully all the words of this law and these decrees. Deuteronomy 17:18-19

8. Memorizing

It’s like having a guide in your mind to help you live the right way.

I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. Psalm 119:11
