Out of your Comfort Zone

Thomas Wilkie has served on various mission trips since age 14. As a recent college graduate and a newer member at StoneBridge, he was thrilled to see all the missional opportunities offered—particularly the Poland trip this past October. He quickly signed up and was excited to travel to a new country and serve those in need of the gospel. Thomas expected this trip to be similar to past mission trips, but he returned from Poland having had a life-changing experience, giving him a stronger faith, fresh perspectives, and a love for Poland and its people.

Thomas was familiar with the mindset and goals of mission trips to serve through manual labor, food distribution, and spreading the gospel. He felt equipped and prepared to carry out these assignments, but what he had not expected was how Bread of Life, the organization who led the team, prioritized relationships with the people as much as the work. Thomas’ eyes were opened to God’s work in a fresh way through the kindness and love of Bread of Life.

Bread of Life intentionally set aside time to get to know the StoneBridge team members, caring for, loving, and making them feel valued. They showed these same intentions to the Polish people while distributing food and working on tiny houses for Ukrainian refugees. Thomas had not witnessed this type of relational leadership on any other team he had been a part of, and it strongly impacted his mind and heart.

Poland is considered a middle power, or “second world country”, and not as poor as others Thomas had served. With higher wealth, the physical needs are not as severe, but the hunger for relationships, comfort, and hope is very real. Loving and knowing them right where they are is paramount to serving a meal or fixing a roof. He believes this approach should guide any team in their endeavors.

Bread of Life has a passion for the Polish people, and it was infectious. Thomas is currently pursuing medical school and is considering applying to the international medical school in Poznan, where their team served, to allow God to weave his career and ministry roles together.

Thomas comments that he was pulled out of his comfort zone in befriending perfect strangers. He was used to mission trips where he worked alongside his teammates, not the locals. He believes he was placed for a purpose with each team member from StoneBridge, Bread of Life, and the people of Poland to experience deeper relationships and grow in his love for God.

Is God calling you to Poland? It is a beautiful country with opportunities to share Christ to the lost. No foreign missions experience needed, just a heart for the lost. God can Place you for a Purpose to experience new relationships this spring.
